Eleusinian Mysteries

Cult of Demeter at Eleusis near Athens; spiritual beacon of the classical world, revolving around the annual springtime Initiation into the Lesser Mysteries at Agrai, followed by autumnal Initiation into the Greater Mysteries at the Eleusinian Telesterion, during which the initiates or Mystai imbibed an entheogenic potion, the Kykeon, thus experiencing a numinous vision which transformed them into Epoptai, those who had seen.

1978 Wasson The Road to Eleusis, 9. Here lies for us the mystery of the Eleusinian Mysteries. To this mystery we three have applied ourselves and believe we have found the solution, close to 2,000 years after the last performance of the rite and some 4,000 years since the first.

1993 Ott Pharmacotheon, 141. The Eleusinian Mystery was an annual celebration of a fertility cult, over which the goddess Demeter presided.
